Rameshwaram is an island on the Indian Peninsula which is an important pilgrim center of the Indians just like vaisho devi Katra . It is where Lord Rama built a bridge across the sea to save Sita from Ravana and asked Lord Shiva for forgiveness for killing Ravana.  One cannot go to the Benares without visiting Rameshwaram. The island is also called 'Benares of the south'. A visit to Rameshwaram is needed to attain Moksha.

Rameshwaram is the most visited pilgrim sites in India. Thanksgiving rituals were made by Ramayana Lord Rama after wining the battle over king Ravana in Sri Lanka which attracted both worshipers of Lord Rama and Lord Shiva. The island has an area of 61.8 square kilometers.

The Ramanatha Swamy Temple is the main attraction of the island. Dravidian architecture is evident on the temple design which was built over a long time starting from the 12th century. The temple has twenty two wells each with different taste from the other.
Agnitheertham, where Lord Rama worshiped Lord Shiva and asked forgiveness for killing Ravana, is 100 meters away from the Ramanathaswamy Temple.

Gandamadana Parvatham is a shrine where Lord Rama's imprint of his feet is placed on a Chakra. The shrine is 2 kilometers away from Rameshwaram.

Dhanushkodi was named after Rama's bow where Adam's bridge, the boulder around the sea between Sri Lanka and Dhanushkodi, can be found.

Erwadi houses the tomb of Ibrahim Sahid Aulia 24 kilometers away from Rameshwaram. Muslims all over the globe visit the place every December to pay tribute to the saint.

There are other places to visit around Rameshwaram. Ramanathapuram, where oil portraits of the Rajas can be found. Tirupullani celebrates the tradition that Lord Rama obtained a bow and arrow to use against Ravana. Uthirakosamangai is where the Shiva Temple is located. Sethu is where Sri Anjaneya is located and nine stones that represent the planets can be seen during low tide and were believed to be set up by Lord Rama.

Reaching Rameshwaram can be done via air through Madurai, 73 kilometers away. Another is through train from the connection Chennai and other major cities. Buses and taxis can take you to the island from Tamil & also Enjoy Travel to Goa
